National Gold Medal Winner
"Best of Show"
1997 National Veterans'
Creative Arts Competition
Every year the Veteran's Administration Conducts regional creative arts competitions that are open to all US military veterans. The regional show winners go on to a national level competition that culminates with an award ceremony held at a Veteran's hospital facility in Different Cities across the US each year. I submitted this painting: titled "Relic of Peace" along with this statement. I wrote about what the painting signifies to me. I did not expect to win the national gold medal but was very honored to receive the award. It was a wonderful experience that culminated in the VA producing 500 copies of my painting. The copies were sent out and hung in veteran's hospital facilities around the country. After the Art's Festival was held in Wisconsin that particular year, the original painting was displayed at the US Capitol in my home town of Washington D.C. My brother was able to go to see the display and took this photo.

U.S. Air Force
In 1977 I learned about an invitation for members of the Art Directors Guild to offer their paintings to the U.S. Air Force Art Collection. I participated for six consecutive years and donated the paintings shown below. The annual event was a black-tie ceremony held each year at either Bolling AFB, or Andrews Air Force Base near Washington D.C. All of the artists who donated paintings were bestowed the rank of Colonel for the evening of the banquet. In addition to enjoying a great honor and party, I got to combine it with a trip back to my home town and a visit with my family. (not so glamorous photos from two of the years' events can be found here: 1 & 2)The paintings that were donated by member's of the Art Directors Guilds and also invited artists from across the country, remain the property of the U.S. Air Force and still hang in bases all around the world. The two labeled paintings below are poor copies, but all I have of those two. The one of the retired veteran is a portrait of my older brother, Tom Green, who served for 22 years in the Air Force. He retired as a Master Sergeant, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

"Judge" - Disney's Festival Of The Master's In 1993, I was elected by my former teacher, Bill Fleming (American Academy of Art) to succeed him as a judge for Disney's annual, national art competition, The Festival of The Master's. The festival is a fantastic four-days of events held each year at the Disneyworld Resort in Orlando, Florida. The competition is open to qualified participants who have earned a primary award in a juried art festival within the previous three years. Those participants are then judged for entrance on submitted works. For the festival, the four show judges, myself, Paul Branch, Mary Lou Hu, and David Van Dommelsen were charged with awarding the top three prizes and twenty awards of merit. The prize money totaled over $50,000. In addition to judging the show, we were included in several opportunities where artist could access us personally to receive constructive input on their work. It was an honor to serve and have such a memorable experience. |

"First Place" - Burbank Art Association
Member's Annual Show and Exhibition
This is a painting that I titled, "California Summer." When I was working in Burbank at W.E.D., I heard that the Burbank Art Association was having their annual competition. I joined up just to enter the upcoming show and I won first place. I really liked this painting but I can't remember what happened to it. I either sold it, or gave it to someone as a gift, but I'm glad I still have this image of it.

"Honorable Mention"
2012 Marin County Fair
The theme for the Fair in 2012 was "Always, Fresh, Fun and Local," in celebration of Marin County's rich agricultural history. I submitted this mixed media painting that I did in oil and acrylics. The subject was a compilation of images from research photos taken on local farms. This is one of my favorite paintings and is therefore, not for sale. The title of this piece is "Oil and Water." I am currently selecting several paintings to enter in the fair this year.

Art on The Farm These two paintings were included in a non-juried exhibit at Art Works Downtown in San Rafael, CA in 2013. The exhibit was a benefit for Marin Orgnaics, produced in conjunction with Art On The Farm, an organization of artists who visit local farms in Marin and Sonoma Counties in order to research, photograph and create plein air works in an effort to bring awareness to the need to continue protection of the local farmlands. I joined Art on The Farm when I moved back to the Bay area in 2012. I was glad to find a group of local artist who appreciate the beauty of the North Bay as much as I do. During my prior residency here in the 1970's, I spent many long, untethered days traveling the countryside with my camera and canvases in tow to capture the views and vistas that I can never get enough of. |
